Chapter 359 - 352: Such Obvious Favoritism
Just as River Sterling had that thought, Seth Quinn’s phone lit up again. He glanced over and saw it was Jenna Quinn.
The corner of his mouth twitched. ’Figures.’
Watching Seth Quinn reject the call again, River complained to himself, ’She’s his own sister, for crying out loud. The difference in how he treats her compared to his girl is night and day. Imagine if it had been someone else!’
After Seth Quinn hung up for the second time, a WeChat message immediately came through. It was from Jenna Quinn.
Big Sis: Why’d you hang up on me?
Seth Quinn replied: Meeting.
Truly terse, not a single wasted word.
Big Sis: If you don’t want your girl anymore, go right on ahead with your meeting.
Reading that, Seth Quinn’s brow furrowed instinctively. The next moment, he shot to his feet. Ignoring the person who was in the middle of speaking, he uttered two simple words, "Meeting’s over," then grabbed his phone and was the first one out the conference room door.
He left an entire room of people staring at each other, utterly baffled.
River Sterling stood up and waved his hand casually. "Meeting’s over, meeting’s over."
...
In the CEO’s office, Seth Quinn stood by the window and called Jenna Quinn back.
The call connected quickly, and Jenna Quinn’s anxious voice came through. "Seth, you’re finally done with your meeting?"
"What’s wrong?" Seth Quinn asked instead of answering. His voice seemed steady, but if you listened closely, you could hear a trace of tension and worry.
"Clara saw me at the mall," Jenna Quinn replied immediately, in no mood to listen closely to his tone.
"She recognized you?" Seth Quinn froze, his heart instinctively skipping a beat.
"Yeah. But luckily, I was fast enough that she couldn’t catch up."
At first, she hadn’t realized that the "Miss Shaw" Clara Grant was shouting for was her. But when the voice seemed to be aimed right at her, she’d turned her head out of curiosity, and that’s when she saw Clara Grant.
Thankfully, she reacted fast. She immediately turned away and ducked into a crowd, finally managing to lose her.
’Come to think of it, Clara Grant must have called me Miss Shaw because she thought Cherie took my surname.’
Seth Quinn let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. If Clara were to find out now that everything was a lie—that even Cherie’s illness was fake, that he had been deceiving her all along and was still lying to her as recently as last night... He didn’t dare to imagine how she would react.
When Seth Quinn didn’t say anything, Jenna Quinn couldn’t help but ask, "Seth, what do we do now?"
Seth Quinn mulled it over for a moment before speaking. "I think... I should find an opportunity to tell her the truth."
Even though he had still been lying to her just yesterday, and even though he didn’t know how she would treat him after learning the truth, he felt it was time.
’Because even if she didn’t corner my sister today, what about later? What about when I take her to the Quinn Family estate? What about after we get married?’
He had been planning to take her to the Quinn family home in the next couple of days to formally meet his parents, but because of the deception, he didn’t dare take her.
’Maybe Rowan was right. I should tell her sooner. The longer I drag this out, the more she’ll hate me.’
Back then, he’d been able to tell Rowan calmly, "So what if she hates me?" But now, the mere thought that she might hate him sent a dull ache through his heart. He felt like he couldn’t breathe. It was unbearable.
"In all this time, have you ever tried to subtly hint at any of this to her?" Jenna Quinn asked, having calmed down.
Seth Quinn gave a bitter laugh. "No. In fact, just last night, I had to lie to her again. I told her that Cherie’s condition had stabilized and that his mother had already taken him back to the U.S.A."
