System Of The Undead

Chapter 88: What Happened Last Night?

Chapter 88: What Happened Last Night?

The night was done and the sun rose in the distance to signify the start of a new day.

The camp was overrun by zombies, they had managed to pull down the gates but just like in the earlier military checkpoint, the zombies had entered a dormant state.

This was because there were no noises and the origin of a horde was about to take place.

Rachel opened her eyes, she was relieved the moment she saw this because it meant that she didn’t die.

She heaved a sigh of relief but she realized that she wasn’t in the clear because it wasn’t just the zombies that she had to worry about but the enemies that resided here.

She had to be careful, peeking down to see if she was in the clear only to see more zombies.

They all stood still, one would think they were sleeping but she didn’t mind this as it meant that she could walk past them as long as she remained quiet.

She was smelling like shit but she was glad that this was the case as it would most likely allow her to walk past this forming horde.

Rachel couldn’t be reckless as she didn’t know where the dog was, that was her biggest concern, to be honest.

She didn’t fear these other zombies because as it stood, there were a lot more dangerous zombies that existed.

Rachel hoped that everyone was okay otherwise there was no way she was getting out of this alive, she quietly rolled over the bus.

She knew that she couldn’t jump carelessly as she didn’t know how she would land, she knew twisting her ankle in a place such as this would most likely guarantee her death.

She needed to be nimble on her feet and while she didn’t know why the zombies did this, she knew it would make it a lot more difficult for her to move about.

Rachel hung off the bus, she knew she couldn’t just let go otherwise her body hitting the ground was sure to make a thumping sound.

She managed to drop to the ground, her knees gave way to cushion the impact because she knew she couldn’t land standing upright.

She felt like her heart was in her stomach, Rachel was terrified as she was mere inches from more than a dozen zombies.

Rachel began to navigate through them, her saving grace was the action she took earlier to cover up her scent.

"Thank goodness for Jason," Rachel thought to herself because this knowledge was gotten from his selfless sacrifice as what he did could have easily gotten him killed.

Rachel, however, noticed something from the corner of her eye, she saw something move and immediately jerked her head in that direction to see what it was.

However, it was out of sight or did she imagine it? Rachel didn’t know what she saw but it could easily be linked to her paranoia.

She was scared shitless so these things were normal but she was worried that this might also not be in her head.

She had to get out of this one way or another, she had to find a shelter to seek refuge in or better yet, leave the camp.

She needed to reunite with them but she also knew that there was no way they would leave her behind considering that they were willing to risk it all for Jason, Rachel hoped that they would do the same for her.

Then it happened again, she saw something from the corner of her eye and this time, she had visual confirmation, it was the dog the night before patrolling the area.

She noticed that it was sniffing and biting the stationary zombies like it was a reflex.

The was soft but its teeth did go in, it looked like it wasn’t even intentional.

But the dog suddenly stopped and looked right at Rachel, Rachel initially thought of running but remembered that the dog couldn’t see.

Yet, it was heading right toward her, Rachel knew she had to remain still because she couldn’t move or the dog might notice her.

Dogs had superior hearing to the average humans and this carried on even in death.

Rachel stood motionless, if she could stop breathing, she would but she couldn’t.

"God please..." This was the only thought in Rachel’s head.

-

Jason’s eyes finally opened but he noted something strange, he was standing.

He couldn’t be standing considering he was out cold, the last thing he remembered was Lorenzo holding him hostage and what he wanted to do with Clementine.

The gentle sun rays shone on his skin as he looked around the room to assess the situation.

"What the hell happened?" Jason thought.

"J-Jason?" Clementine asked and Jason jerked his head in her direction, hoping that he would see her unharmed and the relief that came over him when he laid his eyes on Clementine was something he couldn’t put into words.

"Clementine! You’re okay!?" Jason asked as he moved towards her but Clementine scurried back, pointing her gun right at him.

"Stay where you are!" Clementine warned and Jason raised a brow because why the fuck was she pointing a gun at him.

"What are you doing Clementine? Now isn’t the time to be joking..." Jason said with a frustrated sigh as he continued walking towards her but Clementine let out a bullet that narrowly missed him.

"ARE YOU CRAZY! THAT COULD HAVE HIT ME!" Jason barked.

"The next one goes between your eyes, you psychopath!" Clementine warned.

Jason knew she wasn’t joking but what came over her?

Jason looked around and saw that Sam was bandaged up but he wasn’t dead so that was a good sign but it also looked like Lorenzo had been dealt with.

Jason looked over his shoulder and what he saw horrified even him.

Lorenzo lay on the floor, dead with over a hundred stab wounds on his body and his head chopped off. Jason took a closer look at himself and realized that not only were his hands bloody but he had a knife with him.

Jason dropped the knife, there was no way he could have done this, right?

[Ding!]

[Berserker Mode Deactivated!]

"Hey... This can’t be..." Jason said, looking around, the passive skills he had on earlier were unequipped the moment the Berserker skill became active.

Jason dropped to his knees, clutching his chest as his breathing was all over the place.

He was having a panic attack and the last thing he heard was his name being called but it felt distant, losing consciousness once again.
