Chapter 324: Reunion
Chapter 324: Reunion
Dimitris carried Rachel away, he had to run for his life or he risked getting caught in the crossfire but he confirmed that Jason was alive.
This was the positive in this encounter but he didn’t have it in him to tell him about Glenn’s death.
Then again, was this information even important, as he understood what this could mean on a fundamental level?
Jason was strong, growing exponentially to the point that he could kill these creatures with little to no difficulty.
Jason was the one that has been protecting the community and Dimitris couldn’t believe Rachel’s faith paid off.
He didn’t believe he was alive, there was no reason for him to be alive and Dimitris wondered what he had been up to this past year.
He managed to gain distance but with the horsemen no longer a problem, they could move without much worry.
But Dimitris ran into someone he didn’t expect to as his eyes caught a glimpse of him through his peripheral vision.
He instantly took a step back while dropping Rachel to the ground gently before focusing his gaze on the man before him.
"They got you too, huh?" Dimitris said under his breath as he looked at Corey, he didn’t like him but this was a sorry sight.
Corey was dead and was walking right towards them, Dimitris could have ignored him and carried on.
But he couldn’t leave him in this state because if he didn’t put him down then there was no telling if he would ever be put down. After all, the chances of him running into another human was exponentially low.
He took out a knife but he noticed something wrong with Corey, he wasn’t walking towards him despite him being the one that made the most noise.
"Huh?" Dimitris thought this was abnormal behaviour from the zombie and the next thing he knew, Corey stopped in his tracks.
He tilted his head to the sky and let out a loud growl, he wasn’t following Dimitris but rather Rachel’s scent.
"Even in death, you remain a pig," Dimitris said upon realizing why he was so interested in Rachel.
However, he couldn’t have predicted what happened next as somehow, Corey’s lust towards Rachel when he was alive carried on into his death.
This forced an incomplete evolution due to the nature in which he was turned, the zombies turned by those that possessed a fragment sometimes retained some abilities that the evolved had that turned them.
Somehow, Corey retained a portion of himself and he got on all fours, this alerted Dimitris of the impending danger.
He quickly got in front of Rachel with his knife held in his right hand as he took a combative stance, ready to fight Corey.
There was no one to help them out but he had no plans on backing down.
Corey charged right at him on all fours like some rabid animal but his movement was irregular even though he was running linearly so he was easier to predict for a trained warrior like Dimitris.
However, Dimitris realized he was surrounded by other zombies, that must have been what the earlier growl was for, it was to call the zombies around them to this location.
Dimitris had to focus on the immediate threat which was Corey, Corey immediately tried to sink his teeth into Dimitris’ arm but Dimitris knew he couldn’t move out of the way or it would simply charge right at Rachel.
This was something he couldn’t let happen so Dimitris had no other choice, thrusting his dagger forward to impale the head but Corey suddenly changed the trajectory of his initial attack, forcing the knife to be stuck into the top part of his mouth.
Corey clamped down and this forced Dimitris to let go of the hilt or risked being bitten.
This forced Dimitris to kick Corey away, sending him tumbling to the ground but the other zombies were gaining ground.
He had to defend Rachel and wondered if Jason would come to their rescue but the chances of that happening was low.
Jason left them all these years to fend for themselves, there was no way he would come here just because a few zombies came here.
He targeted those horsemen for a reason but Dimitris knew he could take them on but he didn’t know if they were like Corey.
He instantly backed up to Rachel, taking the knife in her possession and proceeding to cut down some of the zombies around him.
But he noticed Corey take out the knife stuck in his mouth and just stare at it in his hand like this was an object he was trying to recall.
Dimitris kissed his teeth as Corey began swinging wildly at nothing, he was just swinging into the air like he had schizophrenia.
Dimitris realized then that the sooner he got rid of him, the better because he seemed to be learning and the zombies around him, walker type, also felt stronger for some reason.
They no longer just tried to bite him but they tried to grab him in ways that they shouldn’t even be able to think of.
"I need to get out of here..." Dimitris muttered under his breath but to his surprise, he saw the same crow that he had seen earlier and realized that Jason had been watching them all this time with these crows.
That meant he was aware that Glenn was dead but that didn’t mean much to him because they were in a desperate situation but the crow wasn’t the only one that came here.
Dimitris charged towards Corey with the dagger in hand despite the zombie swinging it casually in the air, there was no rhythm so it should be a lot easier for him to kill the zombie.
Corey, even when alive, couldn’t keep up with him so there was no way his dexterity would improve to the point of actually besting him in hand-to-hand combat.
Dimitris swung, attempting to take off his head but a zombie out of nowhere appeared in front of Corey to take the hit.
"What?" Dimitris thought, thinking this was a coincidence but Corey attempted to stab him by running his hand through the zombie’s torso to stab but Dimitris reacted just in the nick of time.
"You sneaky bastard," Dimitris muttered to himself, Corey wasn’t like the rest of these brain-dead zombies but for some reason, the zombies were protecting him.
Ever since Clementine’s transition, a phenomenon where all the zombies within her area of influence gained a portion of her combative skills or ability to defend themselves.
It was like a hive mind and the fact that it had Clementine’s body, who has witnessed how Sam on numerous occasions was a good thing for the dead.
This was why the walkers felt stronger even though they could still be killed easily but in groups, it would make it a lot more difficult.
Rachel’s eyes finally opened slightly, she felt a concussive pain on the back of her head.
She instantly realized their situation the moment her eyes took in the environment and searched herself for the dagger she had on her but it wasn’t there.
She couldn’t find Dimitris either but that was simply due to the way she was seated and the zombies fast approaching her.
Rachel got up to her feet, ready to run but she saw Dimitris locked in with Corey but there was something different about Corey.
She didn’t need more than a minute to deduce he was dead but this wasn’t what worried her the most.
All that she could think of was the creature she saw, she was certain that this was Jason.
She had been with him and she knew it in her bones, he could cover his head from head to toe but there was something familiar about his posture, the way he stood.
"Dimitris!" Rachel screamed and the second she called out to him, Corey immediately dashed towards her, completely ignoring Dimitris.
He ran towards her but Rachel didn’t panic despite Dimitris calling for her to run because Corey was like a child, learning with every move but one thing Dimitris was sure of was that Rachel was his target.
Rachel took a deep breath to calm her mind before opening it, the look in her eyes changed.
The moment Corey was in sight, Rachel quickly removed a second dagger she had hidden on her in case of emergencies, attempting to stab him in the head.
But Corey suddenly ducked down and proceeded to tackle her by slamming into her midsection.
Dimitris tried to rush towards her but the zombies had clustered together making it impossible for him to reach her.
Corey for some strange reason, tried to violate Rachel there and then, attempting to rip off her clothes but this was one thing that wouldn’t be tolerated.
Before Corey could go any further, his head imploded like it had a grenade just sitting there and Rachel saw the same cloaked figure standing across her and her eyes instantly watered.
"I-I guess I can’t leave you for five minutes without getting into trouble, Rachel," Jason said.
Rachel couldn’t see his face but she knew, this was him, this was Jason.
"It took you long enough, you jerk!" Rachel’s voice was barely audible but she didn’t care.
They had finally reunited after a year and all it took was another man trying to have his way with her, the thought alone was something that Jason couldn’t fathom but this was proof of his humanity.
