System Of The Undead

Chapter 314: Day Breaks...

Chapter 314: Day Breaks...

The cosmic reason for everyone being at the exact place they were meant to be.

There was no telling what the universe had in store for them or if it had anything at all as this all looked like one cruel joke.

Corey and his men had arrived at their destination but they didn’t execute them like dogs but rather, gained their trust so they could take as little loss as possible.

However, that went wrong and Corey lost far more men than he would have if he attacked them directly.

But with everything reaching its climax, it remained unknown if they could survive the current state of the world.

It could be questioned that this was their fate but there was also a possibility that these were a series of random events that ultimately accumulated into one.

There was no telling what awaited Clementine as she had lost herself to what seemed like a different aspect of Chronos, a variant to say the least.

But this variant was the most dangerous because it was sucking the very essence and life from the earth.

The moment the roots connected underground, the area with that fragment suddenly became devoid of life.

It drew life from everything it came into contact with but their saving grace was that the range was limited.

But that was only because the roots weren’t all connected and with a few of these things destroyed, this gave them a bit more time.

They had to not only destroy these fragments but discover how to prevent them from doing so.

Sam managed to destroy the huge chunk of rock but also connect the final piece he had been missing, which was about how evolved zombies were created.

San was strong and showed he had what it took to navigate this cruel world even though he embraced the monster he had always been.

Once again, he had abandoned Clementine but gained a new companion in her stead that was far more useful to him than Clementine ever could.

The fact that she could somewhat suppress the fragment’s influence on Sam was invaluable but Sam was aware that whatever got them there would be keeping an eye on them.

There was no explaining it but Sam was one of the things that Chronos knew he needed to get rid of.

The day came to an end and the sun arose to signify the start of a brand new day but with the beginning of a new day, this signified that they had managed to live through the night.

Brayden and his people managed to live through the night, it was surprising that the horsemen didn’t attack during that time frame as that would have been the perfect time to do just that.

Brayden didn’t know where to go from here but the good thing about all of this was that they had managed to survive.

As long as there was life, there was hope and if hope existed, then there was a tomorrow.

He looked back and noticed that the forest was still burning, the fire wasn’t showing any signs of stopping as it eroded all other trees around it.

It kept spreading and it was beyond salvation but that meant that the trees it had burnt down previously were left in a desolate having been burnt to crisp.

They had no food but Brayden knew that his only chance at survival might be through Glenn, that was if he survived this assault.

"What is the plan now?" One of his men asked him; if there were no plans for their future but in this world, there was no reason to plan for a future when tomorrow was a luxury.

"We survive," Brayden responded.

Corey and Co noticed that there had to be a reason the zombies waited until night fell to make their moves.

From a strategic point of view, humans stood an even chance against them in an open field with the weapons in their possession.

The evolved had intelligence but this didn’t make them invincible, they were far from it and this was why they adapted to humanity’s way of fighting.

Corey and co circled the moment the sun rose, they wasted zero to no time after coming up short with their search for the threat the night before.

He had no idea where the zombies went but it was just like that day, they simply disappeared into the distance.

The feeling of deja vu was without a doubt, prominent but Corey had to return.

This place was giving him the creeps as Rachel followed behind him, she could feel the hateful stares of those around her.

She didn’t care because they couldn’t touch her, she knew that Corey was a piece of shit and there was no way he was protecting her but they had to be a reason for his actions that he wasn’t telling anyone.

Did Mariam order him to make sure nothing happened to her? That couldn’t be right considering that Mariam would have no idea that she was coming here to begin with.

This was an impulsive action that nearly cost her life but Rachel had no regrets because she had forgotten how dangerous these creatures were.

They arrived at the car and saw a few bodies littered about but Dimitris was nowhere to be seen, that was who Rachel looked for the moment they came here.

That meant he must have gotten away because whatever did this didn’t mean to turn them into zombies so if Dimitris wasn’t here then it must mean he made it out.

She felt a sense of relief but Corey noticed her shifting gaze and instantly knew who she was searching for.

"If the cars are still here, that must mean that they have kicked the bucket so I wouldn’t get your hopes up... But don’t worry because you could easily get something else up," Corey responded with a sickening grin but Rachel didn’t even bother with a response as she knew that this would only result in a pointless exchange.

"I hope you’re both safe..." Rachel thought to herself in regards to Glenn and Dimitris.

There was no telling where they were or if they survived the encounter but one thing was clear, Corey had no plans to wait on them.

"Get in..." Corey instructed her as they started up the cars around them after taking the weapons off their dead.

"W-Wait, you cannot leave them! We could have survivors! We don’t leave one of our own behind!" Rachel barked.

Corey stared at her in amusement, not because he admired her stance but rather her stupidity.

"I wish your brain was attractive as your tits," Corey mocked her before giving his men the go-ahead.

She had to jump out of the way because Corey didn’t mind running her over, if anything he would have liked it but Rachel got out of the way in time.

She realized that they had a vehicle parked ahead so it wasn’t like she was stranded but there was no doubt that they could use the support that Corey and his men provided.

However, Rachel wasn’t about to abandon one of the few people she still cared about in your wretched world as she watched Corey and co disappear into the distance.

Rachel immediately got up to her feet and rushed towards the car that they had abandoned in the distance.

They had parked it off the road and luckily, it wasn’t caught in the fire as the trees to its left were too small to generate any significant heat that would cause damage to the vehicle.

She was afraid that this might have been what was responsible for the explosion a day before but seeing as it wasn’t, it made the situation all the more strange.

What caused that explosion and why did the zombie react that way?

Rachel didn’t have time to overthink as she saw the car in sight soon after, it hadn’t moved so it was safe to assume that both Glenn and Dimitri were yet to return otherwise there would be some sort of sign.

She knew for a fact that Glenn wouldn’t allow Dimitris to leave her but she didn’t know if this was a good or bad thing because what if she fell in battle?

This would leave them vulnerable and the last thing Rachel wanted was for them to put themselves in danger because of her or she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself should this happen.

Fortunately for her, she didn’t need to wait long as she noticed a figure walking in her direction in the distance.

But upon closer observation, she noticed that he was holding someone within his grasp.

Rachel didn’t want to even begin to think about what this could be.

However, the closer they got, the clearer it became.

The reality of the situation would ultimately shatter the last piece of hope she held that they could all make it through this ordeal.

Dimitris had Glenn on his back and Rachel rushed to his side.

"HURRY UP! PUT HIM DOWN SO I CAN CHECK HIM!" Rachel barked but Dimitris kept walking.

"Don’t bother, he is dead..."
