System Of The Undead

Chapter 307: The Darkness At The End Of The Tunnel!

Chapter 307: The Darkness At The End Of The Tunnel!

The sun disappeared from the sky but the people here had taken precautions as they had a fire lit everywhere, the illumination gave them visuals with Corey and Brayden agreeing to work together.

They were about to fight off this threat together because that was the only way to survive as Corey couldn’t even leave if he wanted to so he was trapped here alongside everyone else.

The possibility of Dimitris being dead only highlighted their danger which the erratic Corey knew was a feat that even he couldn’t accomplish.

"Are you all ready? They should be attacking any moment now!" Brayden barked at his men, Glenn was visibly worried but Rachel was there to calm him down.

No one in their right mind wouldn’t be scared and all of this was because of a gunshot at the worst possible time.

Corey looked over his shoulder at his men, he wanted to give them the option to charge at the undead as if they waited for them to make the first move, they would be at a disadvantage.

Corey smiled to himself as he had an idea with the fire in his hand, this place was safe because of the dense forest around it but the camp itself had no trees in its immediate surroundings.

"Fuck it..." Corey muttered before tossing the fire into the forest and it began to burn immediately with a branch catching fire and another.

It took mere seconds for it to get out of control and Brayden couldn’t believe what he had done.

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?" Brayden barked at him, furious that he had done something so stupid.

"Shut up and watch you retard, this place is over with," Corey revealed because, in hindsight, Corey’s plan was the best possible solution because the fire was one thing that the zombies disliked.

It was reckless but one of the few things that one would consider a last resort as it would force the zombies into making a move.

Corey heard the sizzling of the burning trees and he loved the view even though the thick smoke that came through almost suffocated them.

Corey looked at Brayden and looked at the only safe passage which was behind them, he hadn’t set that path ablaze however he might as well have cut off the zombies’ choice to attack through the burning path.

Corey limited their choice of attack and this was a good thing as they could focus on the path behind them.

Brayden kissed his teeth and they all charged towards that location because they had forced the zombies’ hand.

Corey had unknowingly cut off two of the zombies’ commanders’ paths and this left them with two to deal with and the fight began with the flames burning the forest illuminating their way.

They came into contact with the zombies in less than five minutes but the one on a horse was nowhere to be seen, they began to shoot their way through the horde.

Their bullets ripped through the air as the zombies fell one at a time, they didn’t offer much resistance which was strange considering they supposedly had intellect.

"There is something wrong..." Rachel noted because these zombies were walkers, they were the weakest of the lot yet they were wasting ammunition on them.

It was like using foot soldiers to exhaust the enemy’s supplies before sending in the special forces but they had no choice.

"Glenn! Stop!" Rachel shouted but her voice couldn’t be heard amid the gunshots.

Glenn was among those leading the charge because this could very well be their final battle if things go South, everyone had to be careful.

Rachel noticed a leaf drop from above but the leaves had blocked out her view so she couldn’t even see what was above, she looked up and saw nothing but something told her otherwise.

She focused her gaze there, she was allowed to do this due to the weak zombies that they were currently fighting.

But then it happened, the zombies began to drop from above like flies, this caught everyone off guard as they fell right on them.

Taking bites out of them and the confusion was enough to break the formation however Corey instructed his men to keep charging forward.

There was no turning back, they needed to get out of here but Brayden wasn’t the same as he turned back with his men.

They began to push back the zombies but this only played into their hands, there was little they could do because these weren’t the walker types that they had previously faced.

These were evolved zombies so the warfare was different, they clawed open their throats with both their hands and teeth.

The gunshots became sporadic and they couldn’t shoot them otherwise they would be caught in the gunfire so they were at a massive disadvantage as they were clustered.

And if they died without their brains being destroyed, they would only return to strengthen the army.

"Shit! This is bad!" Glenn cussed out because the gunshots that echoed in the air were gunning down their men.

Glenn ducked down to evade the shots but this only left him vulnerable, there was no way for him to defend himself this way but this was the only thing he could do in this situation.

Brayden realized that this was a lost cause because the zombies seemed endless, they had to keep going forward with the little men they could.

The women and men, even children, were following behind them with guns of their own ready to defend themselves but Brayden arrived in time to help them navigate through the area.

The forest fire helped light up their path but not everyone could be saved.

Some of the women and children had already been cut down before Brayden and his men could reach them.

Rachel was closer to them and the only reason they weren’t all wiped out was because of her, she gunned them down with impeccable precision, shooting them down even though it was only because she wasn’t among those that they were above.

"Thank you! Thank you so much-!" A kid thanked her but before she could complete her words, a bullet went through their head.

Rachel looked in the direction of the bullet and realized that it was Corey who had done it.

It wasn’t an accident, Corey was carrying out his mission amid this chaos as he thought that he had a clear path to retreat as long as the zombies were distracted with these people and Rachel realized that they were strategically using them as decoys.

Corey and his men were shooting their knees, forcing them onto the floor but the blood was what the zombies focused on.

Evolved or not, blood was the one thing that every one of these things craved and it drove them crazy once they smelled it.

"What is he doing!?" Rachel couldn’t believe that he was doing this right now when the situation was this dire.

However, what worried her was she could no longer see Glenn and this made her heart sink.

She couldn’t deal with any more loss but Brayden snapped her out of it by grabbing her hand.

They all ran away, they had to leave the injured behind as the zombies feasted on them.

However, they hadn’t broken out of the encirclement yet but Corey and his men managed to do this as they didn’t care about anyone but themselves.

The zombies on horseback were nowhere to be seen but Corey was shocked that it was this easy. The fire must have set them off.

Rachel was eventually separated from Brayden and Rachel ran as fast as her legs could carry her but she encountered the worst possible outcome.

Rachel ran right into the horseman and with a single glance, she knew that this could be the end of her life.

-

Glenn watched as people fell on the ground, dead but the problem was that he had a limited amount of time to react because they would soon return as the undead.

He couldn’t be on the ground when that happened but the zombies were too many.

The others had deserted the area so the zombies had fewer distractions to deal with, Glenn remained motionless on the ground, trying his best to control his breathing but there was only so much he could do because the people around him began to return to life.

Glenn was resigned to his fate but he wasn’t going to give up and raised his hand to kill the zombie that was returning to life.

He knew if he did this, every other undead would be on him like flies but there was no other choice.

However, before he could do anything, something grabbed his hand and a whisper followed.

"Be quiet!" It was Dimitris but Glenn was lucky that he had spoken otherwise there was no way for him to know because Dimitris had covered himself with guts from head to toe.

And without Glenn saying a word, he wrapped an intestine hanging around his neck like a pendant on Glenn to try and conceal his scent just enough that the undead didn’t perceive it.

"Dimitris... I thought you were..." Glenn responded.

"... Dead? You have such little faith in me but we are getting out of here... The zombies here, they aren’t normal," Dimitris knew that they stood no chance against these zombies, not with their current state.
