Chapter 247: Friction In Bonds!
Chapter 247: Friction In Bonds!
Glenn had sustained a lot more damage than initially thought, he could barely breathe or move.
"I don’t understand!" Mathias blurted out and his fingers trembled, this shouldn’t be possible considering that Glenn hadn’t taken that much damage internally.
So why was his body in this state, it shouldn’t be, it was rejecting something but what was it?
Mathias couldn’t believe it but it wasn’t poison either or he would have been responding to the herbs that he had given him.
Rachel returned to the room and Mathias gestured for her to come over as soon as possible.
She rushed to his side with the medicine that he had instructed her to get.
Mathias was worried but there wasn’t much he could do in that regard because this wasn’t something he could understand.
Glenn wasn’t inflicted by an ordinary wound but the wound had direct contact with the parasite.
"Hang in there Glenn!" Rachel urged him but his fever was at dangerous levels.
"We need to break his fever or he won’t make it through the day!" Mathias warned.
Glenn was on the verge of death despite not having shown these effects earlier.
A cold cloth was placed across his forehead and Glenn was shivering, sweating profusely.
There was no doubt that whatever his body was fighting, it wasn’t something that it could handle.
The people around were a lot better thanks to the medicine that they had gotten but there was no way that they were going to let Glenn be a casualty.
Rachel was growing to respect Mathias a lot more because he didn’t need to go to such lengths to begin with.
He could have called it but he was doing everything in his power to make sure that Glenn pulled.
"Doctor..." Rachel called out, noticing his nose bleed but this only went to show that he wasn’t getting nearly enough sleep.
She thought that Mathias was just a man with a handsome face that only cared about getting into women’s pants but these past few months have shown her otherwise.
He did everything in his power to save lives, filling the shoes that were left for him.
With the determined look in his eyes, he didn’t ever give up regardless of how dire their condition was.
"I will be fine," Mathias said, ignoring the nosebleed and focusing on Glenn.
Josephine watched on, clearly worried by Mathias’ state, this was self-destructive and it wouldn’t do anyone any good if he fell ill.
Rachel was learning quite a lot from him, she could now identify certain sicknesses and the right medicine to treat them with even though it was still entirely surface level.
The world had grown to be a boring place without social media so this was the fun activity that she had picked up.
Rachel found herself smiling at Mathias, he had changed from a terrible person to an earnest man, however, she was beginning to realize that the good could easily become the bad.
Jason was changing but she didn’t understand if it was for better or for worse.
"Mathias, that is enough," Josephine stepped in because she wasn’t going to allow him to push himself to the brink of exhaustion.
"I can take over from here, get some rest Mathias," Rachel reassured him, she knew enough to handle things on her end.
"Thank you... Both of you," Mathias showed his gratitude as he left the ladies to continue from where he left off as he went to an unoccupied room a couple of paces away.
But would Glenn live through this ordeal? That was to be seen.
-
"Kid, where did you come from and how did you survive on your own for so long?" A man questioned but the boy was too frightened to say anything else.
He needed Jason yet Jason was nowhere to be seen and the person before him had a mean-looking face that would scare even a cold-blooded killer.
It would have been more effective if it was Mariam who was here because she was a mother and was better equipped to handle these situations with children.
"We have been at this for almost an hour if you don’t say anything. We would have no choice but to send you back," The man said and the boy’s body tensed up.
However, the door soon swung open and in came Shantel, this wasn’t part of her job so why was she here?
"You... What are you doing here?" He questioned but Shantel simply smiled at him.
"I’m here as Mariam has instructed," Shantel said, the man didn’t even try to oppose her.
Her body was exposed as usual, she was most comfortable in that state.
The man left her with the child and the boy’s body language eased up instantly.
There was something comforting about her face and the fact that she was a woman must have helped.
He felt a lot safer with her than he did with that ogre-looking man he had encountered a few seconds ago.
"You must be hungry..." Shantel started the conversation and this made the boy look around eagerly for food.
"Hahaha! Don’t worry, I have enough food for a big boy like you!" Shantel reassured him by bringing out a cooler that she had brought with her.
She dropped it in front of her and the boy’s mouth watered, this was a boy who had been living off the body of the dead for the longest of time.
Shantel felt pain in her heart the moment she saw how his eyes lit up, she couldn’t imagine what it was that he had been through.
"C-Can I..?" The boy spoke for the first time and all it took to accomplish this was to show a simple kind gesture.
Shantel nodded and he opened the cooler without hesitation, there was a spoon already waiting for him inside.
It was mashed potatoes that she had made from the recent harvest, the boy didn’t even wait or hesitate before rushing the food.
He began to stuff his mouth with the food, Shantel could swear that he forgot how to breathe a couple of times but this was a heartwarming sight.
But this was the breakthrough they needed to get through to him.
