Chapter 221: Mastermind?
Chapter 221: Mastermind?
Jason closed his eyes, silencing his thoughts and preparing for the battle that was to come.
The moment his eyes opened, he found that he was surrounded by these people.
There were two people behind and one in front of him.
"Is this all?" Jason asked, sounding a tad bit arrogant but he had good reason for this arrogance.
Jason noted that there was a girl among them with another man, who was missing an eyes but there was no doubt that there were fragments within them.
"Chronos, I will need your help here," Jason muttered and Chronos already knew that he couldn’t handle them alone with his help.
They didn’t waste any time, Jason noticed that one of them was holding a sword, a clean Japanese katana and he could just tell that it was sharp as fuck but the other one held a gun.
Jason didn’t know what to do because most of his skills that relied on stats were defunct but this didn’t mean the skills were invalid.
Jason could still use it and with no stats to tie them, it meant that he could use them with more efficiency.
The girl charged at him, trying to cut him in half from his midsection, Jason could tell by a single look that she was dead, there was no life in her eyes hence the lack of self-awareness.
Jason knew he couldn’t block it, only managing to take a step back, getting away from her swing but why weren’t they all coming at him together?
They would have a better chance at cutting him down that way because if they came at him one at a time, it would give him a chance but Jason also knew he couldn’t face them without activating the Nexus which would only speed up his infection but he was surrounded by three fragments.
He should be fine if he was able to get his hands on just one.
Jason had his Nexus activated, that would also explain why the bullet bounced off his skin.
He charged at the woman but she attempted to cut him once again, Jason wondered how strong his body was and assumed it was enough to tank a sword since he could do so with a katana.
However, he was wrong, the sword had cut him and Jason quickly kicked her away before she could do further damage.
"What?" Jason muttered, clutching his bleeding shoulder, blood dripping down his arm.
[[Traces of fragment detected]]
Jason got his answer with that notification, that wasn’t a normal sword and that explained why it was able to damage him.
"It seems you people can’t be underestimated..." Jason said but the man that was watching had a reason he didn’t charge at Jason.
He wanted to see just how long he could keep up with these superhuman traits he was exhibiting.
"You’re wondering why I’m not going all in with you, right?" The man questioned but Jason didn’t care enough to engage in a conversation with him.
"The fragment you have is unlike nothing I have seen, I need to understand it better before I consume it. It is fascinating, it is almost like it drew us all to you." The man said and this was where Jason got suspicious.
"Drew you to me?" Jason thought; this shouldn’t be possible if Chronos was keeping his energy from leaking out of his body but then again, he could be referring to the moment that Jason had instructed Chronos to cease its function.
"The moment you stepped in here, right from your car, I could feel. Whatever it is inside me, it wanted you, it hungered for you," The man said and this shattered Jason’s theory.
[[I know nothing of this]] Chronos could feel Jason’s suspicion growing and had to nip it in the bud right now.
"Does it speak to you?" The man muttered and this was what got Jason’s attention.
The man noticed that Jason trailed off mid-conversation like he was having an inner monologue with himself but in actuality, he was speaking to Chronos.
"What?" Jason asked, he wanted to be sure he heard what he heard.
"Does it speak to you?" The man reiterated but he shouldn’t even know about this unless something similar was happening with him.
"I could help you understand your power..." The man suggested but Jason smirked the moment he heard this.
Time was running out, he had approximately seven minutes left, give or take.
Jason knew he could interrogate this person once he got rid of all the bodies present.
Jason charged at the lady and she plunged her sword forward but Jason didn’t attempt to dodge it.
He allowed it to impale his chest but made sure to move at the very last second so it missed his vitals.
Proceeded to smash the head of the evolved zombie between his palm, cruising the head with one hit.
Jason had to take damage to create this opening, time wasn’t his friend so if he could get rid of them before Nexus ran out, that would be swell.
He now had a sword that was crafted with parts of the fragment, how this was possible wasn’t his business.
"Another one bites the dust," Jason muttered right before ripping the fragment out of her body.
He knew he couldn’t keep accumulating injuries but the other zombie just stood still.
Jason wondered why he wasn’t stopping him from consuming the fragment, it felt like he wanted him to.
"Go on, eat it..." The man urged Jason, but this only made him suspicious of the content.
Jason had so many questions but he knew this was the first step to understanding what the hell was going on.
He consumed the fragment and he could feel the accumulation of power.
[[Fragment 1/6]]
The requirement for the fragment to level him up had increased but Jason had no problem no problem with it. The man was watching him like he expected something to happen.
Jason thought he was coming here for a fight but it didn’t feel that way, not anymore.
"Go on, kill him too," The man instructed and Jason wasn’t going to waste this chance.
He used his newly acquired tool to dispose of the zombie without hesitation and yank out the fragment from within its brain.
He didn’t waste any time consuming it.
"There are no side effects..." The man muttered; he was amazed by this.
Jason wanted to end this, he wanted to finish the battle but the man seemed to have a change of heart.
"It is just like he said..." The man muttered but before Jason could react, he pointed the gun at himself however before pulling the trigger.
He told Jason one thing that made him question this whole thing.
"Was my acting convincing enough? You should probably get your friends... Jason," The man said right before pulling the trigger, killing himself.
Jason didn’t even have time to comprehend what was happening but something told him his friends were in danger.
Jason rushed to the cave and realised that neither Ana, Dimitris, or Glenn were there and at that moment, Jason realised that there was someone else pulling the string.
Someone who could not only infuse the fragments into people but actively make zombies that were closer to human than the actual undead.
"DIMITRIS! GLENN!" Jason screamed at the top of his lungs but there was no response.
-
The military were in the middle of nowhere, who they were looking for was unknown but it must be someone important for them to wander this far.
"Colonel Sanders, we have found traces of a single person walking this path!" A military man said.
"That can’t be him, he wouldn’t be stupid enough to leave his trail," Sanders responded.
The search party combed the area, it was devoid of zombies.
There wasn’t a single zombie present which is strange considering they saw a lot on their way here.
It was unnaturally clean and Sanders began to have second thoughts about his earlier statement.
"Be careful, it could be a trap..." Sanders muttered.
"We have found a door leading underground, Colonel!" One of his men informed him and Sanders knew they were getting closer to their targets.
It was only a matter of time at this rate but they needed to be careful, they couldn’t let their guard down.
Not for a second because they didn’t know the threat that awaited them even though they had enough firepower to get rid of them.
Nothing was standing in their way.
"Should we breach, Colonel?" Sanders was asked but he had a bad feeling about this.
However, his gut feeling also told him that they might find who they were looking for beneath.
"Breach." Sanders gave the command and that was what his men did.
They swarmed the ground with Sanders following after his men, they had torchlights at the helm of their guns so their path was illuminated.
"Let’s get to the end of this," Sanders muttered as the operation began.
