Chapter 214: Did The Zombie Just...!
Chapter 214: Did The Zombie Just...!
Glenn and Carl ran away but Glenn noticed that a zombie was chasing them, and it was running on all fours.
He knew that he had to get Carl away if anything and this gave him a sense of urgency, he knew he couldn’t fall here because Jason had given him a responsibility.
"Carl, run faster!" Glenn urged him on, he was faster than Carl but this was to be expected.
The zombie was gaining on them and the worst happened, Carl tripped and tumbled to the ground.
Glenn had two options, abandon him and save himself or risk his life to save Carl.
There was no doubt which he would choose and he quickly ran to Carl while releasing a barrage of bullets towards the zombie.
The zombie managed to dodge most of the bullets but one had managed to pierce his elbow, snapping it into two due to the pressure the zombie was applying on his limb.
Glenn noticed that Carl had sprained his ankle, which meant that he couldn’t run as fast.
"This is bad!" Glenn thought to himself as he noticed the zombie getting on its feet.
Due to the limb that had snapped, it couldn’t run as fast on all fours so the logical thing to do was get up; this increased their chance at survival but also made it a lot easier to hit it.
Glenn already wasted enough bullets and wasn’t even sure if there were still bullets within the gun but he had no choice but to gamble on this choice.
Glenn threw Carl over his shoulder and dashed forward, the zombie continued chasing.
"What the fuck was that?" Glenn now understood why Jason was worried when he told them about this new species of zombies.
Glenn ran but Carl’s weight was slowing him down, he pointed his gun backwards and to his surprise, the zombie responded to it.
The zombie moved out of the way and Glenn was confused because there was no way for the zombie to know that a gun was pointed at it.
"Can it see me?" Glenn thought to himself but this didn’t matter, he fired the bullets from the gun’s nozzle and it found the zombie.
There was no way that the zombie was faster than a bullet and this showed its superiority in terms of speed.
It brushed the zombie’s forehead but narrowly missed killing the zombie because Glenn was in motion, making it even more difficult to hit his target.
But the second bullet did the trick, piercing the zombie, and killing it as it hit the ground head-first.
Glenn would have released more bullets but he had run out of them so if they encountered another zombie of that calibre, they were doomed.
"Good job Mr Glenn!" Carl praised the man who had saved his life but Glenn was worried because they were in no position to deal with these zombies.
"Jason... How the hell did you survive these things?" Glenn questioned because from what Jason had told them, the zombie he encountered was way worse.
However, unknown to Glenn, something far worse was closing in on them.
-
Jason reached his destination and all he saw was blood splatter everywhere, he didn’t even know what to think because there was clearly a sign of a struggle so where was the body?
Did Dimitris manage to escape? Jason couldn’t think too much about this as he soon stepped into a slimy substance.
"What the fuck is this?" Jason thought because what came to mind was the tracker zombie that had found them back at the motel.
[[Analyzing...]]
Chronos analyzed the substance, if anyone could identify what it was then it was Chronos.
[[Analyzing complete!]]
[[ERROR!]]
[[CANNOT IDENTIFY!!]]
This already told Jason whatever he needed to know, that it was either Dimitris was already dead or that he had managed to escape.
The same thing would have been to continue the mission without him but Jason wasn’t going to give up on him, not now at least.
There was still a possibility but Jason also liked that the system he possessed became a lot more passive because the last thing he would need to complicate his life was the pointless tasks that Chronos assigned to him frequently.
"Chronos, I need you to establish a trail, I need to find Dimitris!" Jason commanded.
Chronos did just that using a heat signature but the heat signature was purple showing that it was the essence of the fragment left behind by whatever it was that found, Dimitris.
"An evolved?" Jason thought because he didn’t even register it on the map so what the fuck was going on?
"How the fuck did an evolved zombie come here without my notice?" Jason asked Chronos.
[[I believe the evolved have found a way to suppress their essence just like you have.]]
Jason knew that this was the worst possible outcome because it meant that they could move undetected and if he was going to find them at all it would be as normal zombies.
This gave them the perfect camouflage because he had no way of separating them.
However, this trail that Chronos had provided him would prove invaluable.
Jason’s iris took on a different hue and this was what allowed him to do it which was strange considering he didn’t even have this skill in his arsenal.
However, he could now access some of Chronos’ innate skill set ever since absorbing his essence.
Jason ran as fast as his legs could carry him, he knew time was of the essence and the fact that he didn’t know Dimitris’ current status weighed heavily on him.
Was Dimitris alive or was he dead? This was what he needed to find out.
He didn’t need to go far, however, he saw a zombie walking casually with Dimitris’ motionless body across its shoulder.
The trail he was following ended there but the zombie was oozing that exact color.
The zombie already knew he was headed his way because unlike it, Jason wasn’t hiding his aura even though he was able to track the zombie due to residue it left from the slim that Jason had stepped into.
Chronos might not have been able to identify the zombie it came from but it could pick up the residue aura it left behind to establish a trail.
The zombie turned around and Jason nearly threw up the moment his eyes made contact with it, it felt like the zombie had ripped someone’s face off and wore it as some sort of mask.
Maggots were crawling beneath, he could see them crawling out of the zombie’s hollowed-out eye sockets.
Jason gulped because this zombie looked as dangerous as they came, not to mention the disgusting mask it wore.
"You ugly bastard, drop hi-!" Jason couldn’t even complete his sentence before the zombie seemingly vanished out of sight, it was like its very environment had swallowed him only for Jason to feel a devastating blow from the left side of his torso, sending him flying like a ragdoll.
The zombie had not only vanished out of his sight but it had managed to inflict heavy damage without Jason being able to react.
It was devastating and Jason knew he had to lessen the blow, this was why he activated Nexus the moment he lost sight of the zombie.
This allowed him to take the blow or rather, tank it despite still receiving damage even though it was minimized.
[[Retreat Jason, there is no way you can beat it]]
This was the first time that Chronos had given such advice but Jason knew he couldn’t abandon Dimitris.
"Fuck that," Jason responded while slowly getting up to his feet, the zombie turned its attention to him but it tilted its head to the side.
"That’s right you big ugly fucker," Jason said right before opening fire; the zombie disappeared once again but this time, Jason was able to track its movement.
Jason ducked down to dodge the kick of the zombie while simultaneously grabbing that foot.
"Got you..." Jason muttered but the zombie simply brought its leg down, aimed at crushing Jason’s head in his crouched position but Jason managed to roll away.
But he had no time to rest because the zombie was already attempting a drop kick to smash him beneath his feet.
Jason was confused as to why the zombie tried to kill him, it must be the fragment that it sensed from him.
The zombie stopped the moment it missed Jason and just stood there for a few seconds.
Jason was confused about what was happening but then Dimitris awoke.
Jason was scared that this was the undead version of him but to his surprise, Dimitris was alive.
His facial expression turned from surprise to horrified.
"GGGGRRRR!" The zombie growled and Jason immediately got on guard but something happened that he couldn’t have predicted in a million years.
The zombie gestured for Jason to follow it before continuing on its path.
"Did it just communicate!?" Jason knew that they had evolved but this was unprecedented.
In six months, they were able to communicate.
Jason had nothing to lose because if it wanted Dimitris dead, it would have killed him but it didn’t mean that it wanted him alive and now, it wanted Jason too but for what? That was what Jason was about to find out.
