Chapter 210: Hidden In Plain Sight
Chapter 210: Hidden In Plain Sight
Rachel was back at work, working harder than she had ever worked before because she knew what could happen if she didn’t give it her best.
Rachel was aware of Mathias’ interest in her and the fact that she was about to drop her guard around him made her realize that she wasn’t as bulletproof to men as she thought.
She was in a vulnerable state and Mathias didn’t do anything wrong, he played his cards right and almost got his reward if not for Jason’s return.
Mathias understood boundaries and didn’t try to do anything funny because Jason was the last person he wanted to mess with.
Mathias and her became strictly work acquaintances and he envied Jason secretly because Rachel was a babe.
Things were going well and they were able to help people who were sick recover quickly due to the sickness not being anything too serious.
"Damn it, things aren’t looking good..." Rachel muttered under her breath.
They were barely curing these people and she knew that something as simple as a fever could prove fatal if they weren’t careful, especially in the kids.
"Rachel..." Mathias called out to her.
She might not like him but he was still her superior so she had no choice but to respond to him.
"What is it, Doctor?" Rachel made sure she was formal so the conversation that was about to follow could follow that format as well.
"I need you to get me some plants," Mathias instructed, this was strange because what could plants do?
"Pardon me?" Rachel needed clarification as to what he meant by this.
"I have been reading books and how herbs have healing properties, people in older civilizations relied on this type of medicine to get well and I have been able to identify some of these herbs myself," Mathias said.
Rachel didn’t like him but she couldn’t deny the fact that this man truly cared about his patients.
The fact that he has been reading books for possible alternatives told her how seriously he took his role.
He was the only doctor in the community and as such, one could say he was the most important figure in it.
A healer is one of the most protected, even in video games because they can replenish the energy and health of their troops.
"Oh, I will head to the farm and check for it," Rachel said.
"It can’t be found within the walls but outside and how would you know it when you don’t even know what it looks like?" Mathias asked.
This was a good question but did this mean he was going to tag along with her?
Wouldn’t it be better to ask one of the more experienced fighters to escort him?
Once again, he was her superior so there wasn’t much she could do.
All she could do was follow his orders but Mathias was taking her so she could not only know the environment the plants grow but also so she could fetch it next time on her own.
A gesture that went unnoticed by Rachel and with Allison having people going constant patrols outside the gates, the risk of encountering a zombie was close to 0%.

Clementine and Samantha were settled in, no one had approached them yet as they were too wrapped up in their worlds.
The sound of chatter echoed and Clementine wondered if they were even allowed to go outside.
How did the military feed these many people without running out of supplies themselves?
They had rations saved up for emergencies that could last a few years at best and it would be more effective if these people were working for their meals.
Otherwise, they would be wasting food on dead weights which wasn’t efficient in terms of longevity.
"This wasn’t what I was expecting..." Clementine couldn’t contain her shock.
She secretly expected this to be a trick to lure them there, with what she had seen this wouldn’t be any surprise.
"You and me both," A man interrupted their conversation
Clementine was curious who it was and this prompted her to look back only to see a man, whose face was bandaged so she couldn’t even make out his face.
"Don’t you know it’s rude to interrupt when others are speaking?" Clementine teased him, displaying her ability to camouflage in social interactions.
Something that amazed Samantha each time she saw it.
"Not when they look as pretty as you both," The man responded.
"Oh stop it..." Clementine responded.
"Disgusting..." She thought to herself, her thoughts didn’t match the words coming out of her mouth.
"What happened to your face?" Samantha asked bluntly and the man smiled at how blunt she was.
"I had a little accident or rather, I was attacked by someone. I had to cover it up or I would scare the children," The man responded.
"With what’s out there? I don’t think an ugly man should be their problem..." Samantha blurted out and an awkward silence followed.
Clementine sighed, leave it to Samantha to ruin the image she was trying to create for them both.
But she heard a snicker and that snicker soon escalated into laughter.
The man found this humourous and Clementine realised that Samantha’s bluntness might be a plus rather than a minus.
"Right!" The man exclaimed, agreeing with her statement.
"I didn’t quite catch your names," The man was trying to get to know them.
They had made a very good first impression but Clementine knew it might not be a wise choice to give him her real name.
"I’m Shauna," Clementine said without hesitation because who hesitates giving up their name?
"Samantha over here," Both ladies introduced themselves.
Clementine’s eyes weren’t focused on him and was constantly scanning the room.
She has taken note of 3 armed personnel in the room, which would explain why this place had order but why were they in the room?
"Those are nice names," The man complimented them and Clementine knew it would be in her best interest if she allowed Samantha to handle this conversation considering she was the one staying here.
She needed friends who could help make her life easier.
"Aren’t you going to tell us your name?" Samantha wasn’t going to be the only one introducing herself.
"My apologies, my name is... Anderson," The man introduced himself but to Clementine, this was just another name, little did she know that the biggest clue to finding out what happened to Sam was right in front of her.
