Chapter 158: The Shed
Chapter 158: The Shed
Jason arrived back in the camp but he didn’t see Clementine nor Franklin.
Jason knew they must have been tired from the task that they had just completed.
He could feel his body becoming sluggish, Jason needed some shut-eye.
He looked around and noticed that it was getting late.
The sun was descending but Jason needed to talk to A.
He hasn’t spoken to the man in charge ever since coming here and that didn’t sit well with him considering that Clementine and Franklin didn’t tell him what was discussed.
Jason wandered for a bit and he was surprised that these people were living so freely.
He eventually found himself in a completely different section of the camp and this brought him to a wooden shed, it looked a lot better than a tent and Jason assumed that this was A lived.
Seeing as A was their supposed leader, naturally, he should be living in a place considered fancy by their standard.
"Hm..." Jason thought, something told him to turn back but he couldn’t shake off the feeling of curiosity.
Jason’s curiosity got the best of him and he began to walk in that direction.
He was looking around him in case anyone came into view.
Jason was at the door of the shed and reached to open it but before he could yank it open, a hand grabbed his wrist.
"You shouldn’t..." The voice warned and Jason looked to his left to see that it was the girl he has been shagging.
"What’re you doing here?" Jason asked; before a conversation could even come out of this.
A appeared with a couple of men and she quickly grabbed Jason and dragged him out of view.
Jason wanted to ask what was happening but something told him that talking right now would be the wrong choice.
Jason watched as the men walked right into the shed, he didn’t know what was inside but he was more confused as to why the woman beside him had risked her safety to "save" him.
It wasn’t just A who entered but everyone that was with him.
"You don’t ever enter there," The lady finally spoke, wanting Jason but Jason wondered what could be behind that door.
"What is behind that door?" Jason thought it wise to just ask but he got his answer with the shrieking screams that echoed
from the room.
Jason flinched before being dragged away by the lady, she knew this area a lot better than he did so he trusted her leadership.
She didn’t have to save him but she did and this made Jason question who it was that was there. It couldn’t be Glenn, it didn’t sound like any of them.
They reached safety eventually and Jason had questions, he looked at the dark-skinned girl, he was fuming.
"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?" Jason lost his cool, even though he said this in a hushed tone, the urgency in his voice was telling.
"That is how we survive, Jason..." She said and Jason wondered what she meant by this.
"You never even told me your name..." Jason finally realized that he didn’t have a name to go with the face.
"I’m Shantel and I will advise you to stay out of A’s business or you will be killed," Shantel said but Jason raised a suspicious brow because this sounded like a threat.
"Shantel... What are you people hiding?" Jason asked and the young lady knew that his curiosity would only get him killed and if she didn’t tell him, there was nothing stopping him from going there again.
She couldn’t risk it and knew she had to tell him something.
"We aren’t hiding anything but you could say we have been forced to do heinous things to survive," Shantel said; Jason understood this as everyone was forced to do this in some form or another but this felt like more or she wouldn’t be this protective of the information that he asked about.
Jason chose silence, he didn’t want to interrupt and give her an out, he needed her full attention in this conversation.
"Why do you think we wanted to kill you people?" Shantel asked and this was a random question that caught Jason off guard.
"I would assume it’s because we are a threat?" Jason questioned and Shantel shook her head to deny this.
"You weren’t a threat, they could have killed you all if they wanted to but everything you have experienced up till now is false..." Shantel said as she sat down, Jason followed suit as he knew that this was about to be a long conversation.
"We ladies have a job, what I told you before wasn’t entirely true," Shantel said to which Jason’s interest peaked.
He wondered why Shantel chose to tell him now, did it have anything to do with the medicine they retrieved or was Shantel catching feelings for Jason?
The latter looked less likely but a possibility nonetheless and one that Jason knew he had to entertain.
"What kind of job?" Jason asked and Shantel looked panicked, she hesitated and Jason knew he had to reassure in some way.
"I know you don’t want to be here and if you help me, I can convince the others to allow you to come back with us," Jason said and Shantel’s eyes lit up.
"Really?" She asked and Jason nodded with a smile, this was all the motivation Shantel needed.
"We ladies seduce the visitors or the men that manage to make it to the camp to get them to lower their guard," Shantel said and Jason’s eyes narrowed.
He was eagerly waiting for what she had to say next as he couldn’t connect the pieces yet.
"... And once their guard is lowered, the men come in at night and take them..." Shantel said and Jason smiled, he knew it was too good to be true.
There was no way a woman would drop her panties that fast without any ulterior motive.
"Where do you take them, to the shed? To do what with them?" Jason was now asking the questions because he wanted a more direct answer.
"We take them to the shed to prepare for consumption. Food has been hard to come by, we don’t kill people to rob them. We kill them to consume," Shantel said and Jason felt his heart sink into his stomach.
He could feel his stomach rumbling and a feeling of nausea overwhelmed him.
Jason threw up without thinking twice.
"We have been eating people!?" Jason exclaimed.
"No, you haven’t. We caught a large horse a day before you arrived. A has been giving you that to consume because he made the mistake of giving someone human meat and they recognised what it was due to the body part served. It nearly cost us the camp," Shantel said.
She could tell Jason was disgusted with her just by the way he glared at her but it had to be said.
Jason knew he couldn’t be angry forever because she could have easily let him become one of the meats.
"So my dick in your mouth was you tasting it raw?" Jason teased and Shantel didn’t even know how to react to this. She didn’t know if it was a joke or not.
"Are my friends under any threat?" Jason asked her bluntly and she shook her head without missing a heartbeat.
"Not anymore, you have earned A’s respect but under no circumstance should you ever go to that shed. It is because of that man that we have lived this long," Shantel said and Jason sighed.
"Fine, I got it. I’m really tired..." Jason muttered, he could feel his head banging like his brain was trying to rip open his skull.
The recoil of pushing his body to the limit was hitting him a bit too hard as Jason’s body couldn’t handle the strain just yet. He had to increase his overall strength and endurance to fully utilize the Nexus.
"Do you want me to stay..." Shantel asked and she expected a no after revealing what she just did but she got an answer she wasn’t expecting.
"Yes... Please stay," Jason said and Shantel couldn’t help but smile as she lay beside Jason, facing away from him.
However, the tall man turned to face her and wrapped one arm around her torso, dragging her closer to him.
To Shantel, this was Jason reciprocating interest in her but this wasn’t the thought in Jason’s mind, not even close.
"She’s useful, I have to keep a close eye on her," Jason thought to himself.
She had not only spilt invaluable information, Jason wondered what else she had to tell him.
Clemntine had once thought that he could be manipulated by sex, she never once assumed that women are far more prone to being manipulated emotionally and that’s exactly what Jason was doing right now, taking a page right out of Clementine’s book and altering it.
Shantel had just betrayed her camp for Jason taking her away with him and whether Jason intended to keep this promise or not was unknown.
