Chapter 133: Into The Danger Lands!
Chapter 133: Into The Danger Lands!
The drive was long and quiet, Jason could tell the people around him were both nervous and excited.
He didn’t know what to do with the adrenaline pumping through his veins but he knew that he couldn’t have a conversation either, he didn’t want to have one.
The way Franklin handled the vehicle was impressive, he drove like he was a racer in the world that fell and the car ran some zombies over.
"Chronos, what do you think about this mission?" Jason asked his system and Chronos didn’t know how to respond to this question at first.
It didn’t know the answer that Jason sought and wasn’t planning on giving him the wrong one.
"Chronos buddy, you there?" Jason asked.
[I think this mission will be successful but seeing as it is an unexplored territory, I estimate losses.]
Chronos informed Jason; that he had a point because there was a reason they didn’t venture further than they needed to, it was because they didn’t know how the other cities were.
People had told them about the apocalypse being different from where they came from, the moment the check-up point fell, some people rushed into Albany to seek refuge.
The apocalypse had been going on for quite some time and other areas was far more infested than Albany, the city they were from.
"You don’t think I know that? We have no choice and I’m sure with you, we will survive this," Jason responded but he misunderstood something that Chronos was now going to make clear.
[Jason, I’m not responsible for the lives of others, just yours.]
Chronos responded bluntly and Jason wasn’t surprised to hear this.
He knew that Chronos would give this response because it was his system but Jason knew he could strong-arm Chronos into doing what he needed as Chronos needed him more than he needed the system.
"You know, if you don’t protect the people I care about, I just might misplace the fragment I received..." Jason teased but Chronos didn’t understand what he meant by this but the system knew it was threatening it.
[You cannot lose the fragment.]
Chronos was direct with his response but Jason assumed this was just another random conversation.
"I can do whatever I wish with it," Jason responded.
[The fragment evolved the very world you live in and if it can affect dead people, what effect do you think it would have on humans?]
Chronos asked Jason and Jason fell quiet, he lost his voice the moment Chronos said this or rather, his thought process.
"What the fuck are you saying Chronos?" Jason questioned because this was once again, new information that Chronos was revealing.
[The fragment is the beginning and the end, there is no escaping what can be done but you have control over how you use it.]
Chronos said; it was cryptic, Jason couldn’t understand what he meant by the beginning and the end but what he wanted to know was how he could use the fragment.
"I use it?" Jason asked; curious to hear what Chronos had to say because he knew he needed all the strength he could get.
"You haven’t said a word, are you worried?" Glenn said, nudging Jason slightly to get his attention.
"Ha! You caught me, I have a bad feeling about thi-!" Jason couldn’t complete this sentence because a concussive force rocked his head.
The force shook his brain, stunning and dazing him all in one go.
Jason looked up, realizing that the car Franklin was driving had hit something that burst its tyre and forced the car out of control to hit a nearby tree.
"Is everyone okay?" Franklin asked in the calmest voice he could muster.
Jason looked over at the passenger seat to make sure that Clementine was alright.
That was his priority and he noticed that he had injuries on her hand meaning she braced herself for impact before it even happened.
Such quick reflexes but that was to be expected with someone of her rank.
Jason noticed that Glenn was unconscious, he wasn’t moving and he hoped that this was it.
Jason didn’t want to assume but if it came to it, he knew that Glenn would be abandoned.
He knew he needed to leave the car but this was due to the movies he had watched about cars blowing up after having an accident.
Jason crawled out, he noticed the person that was beside him flew right through the windscreen and onto the pavement, he was dead without a doubt.
The car behind them stopped and the person in the passenger seat rushed out to investigate what was going on.
Clementine already exited the totalled car with Franklin following suit.
Jason struggled a bit but he managed to pull Glenn out after sneaking out the broken glass.
He sustained cuts but nothing serious, everyone knew this might be a problem because they didn’t have enough vehicles to cart away any potential goods or loot that they might get from this venture.
Clementine rushed to check on Glenn and she was relieved after she ran a quick examination on him. He was breathing and he didn’t seem to have any broken bones.
She was in the military and this meant that she knew first aid but this action didn’t go unnoticed by Franklin.
They looked ahead and saw that the man that had died still had his head intact, this meant that he would turn if they left him as he was.
"What the hell happened!?" The man asked but Franklin was focused on the environment.
The tyre didn’t just pop, it was made to pop but why?
"It’s an ambush..." Clementine muttered under her breath but these words were only heard by Jason due to their proximity.
"EVERYONE TAKE COVER!" Franklin shouted and the man who had come to check if they were right suddenly fell to the ground, a bullet pierced his head, killing him instantly.
They took cover behind the car that had crashed, shielding them from the volley of bullets.
Franklin and Clementine didn’t have their gun on them, it was still in the car.
They knew they had to preserve the other vehicle or the venture would be lost.
Jason managed to pull Glenn to safety but things were looking dim.
"GO!" Franklin instructed the remaining three people in the car and they listened to his command.
The man immediately stepped on the gas and they drove off, this meant that Franklin was stranded with limited firepower.
Jason handed Clementine the gun strapped to his back and this was enough for her to return fire and the other person that had survived also returned fire.
Franklin couldn’t believe that they were in this situation but he knew that if they stayed there, the gas tank had a chance of detonating.
"What do we do!?" Jason asked Franklin seeing as he was the leader.
Franklin placed a finger on his lips and instructed Clementine and the other man with them to stop retiring fire.
This was to give the enemy the illusion that they had either run out of ammunition or killed.
This trick will determine if they are dealing with amateurs or seasoned killers.
"Did we get them?" A voice asked and Clementine knew now was the perfect time to gun them down before they came too close.
"There is only one way to find out. Go check, the others will soon be here," Another man said and Clementine realized why Franklin didn’t kill them.
It was for information because they wouldn’t have known that they were not alone otherwise.
"Follow my lead," Franklin said but Clementine knew that they had to get out of there or they would be killed.
Even though she knew she wasn’t invincible just because she was in the military, she had to do something.
She looked at Glenn and realized that they had to find a way to get him to safety, this was why she wanted to see what Franklin had in store.
"If you kill them, negotiation is out the window," Franklin said but the man beside him felt disgust upon hearing this because they had killed two of theirs.
"Who the fuck cares!?" The man shouted; he stood up to gun down but Clementine tackled and pinned him to the ground before looking at Franklin.
Franklin gave her a nod of approval but Franklin realized that this woman had combat training.
"Calm down..." Clementine said and Jason was looking around to see what was happening.
They weren’t the only ones and he didn’t know the position of the others, they could be coming from the other side of the road and this would mean they were sandwiched between them.
[Ding!]
[Quest Received!]
The moment Jason saw this, his heart stopped because he knew what was about to happen.
He hoped and prayed that Chronos wouldn’t give him a troublesome quest but this has never been the case with his system.
[Eliminate the threat!]
Chronos instructed but why was it singular? Jason soon realized in horror what he meant.
Chronos was asking him to kill the person that Clementine was holding down.
