Chapter 1559 - 835: Invitation Letter (Part 2)
Jimmy: "OK, OK! I understand."
Ruiz could tell from Jimmy's expression that he was just being perfunctory, but this wasn't something that could be changed with a few words. For Jimmy, doing it himself was the most efficient approach, but that's not what his current position called for. It would have to be something that changed gradually over time.
Ruiz was being considerate, giving Jimmy a rundown on what the anti-gang unit should focus on and what tasks needed attention. These were things David was supposed to communicate with Jimmy before leaving, but... in short, Jimmy only had an office handover with David, leaving quite a few gaps. However, Jimmy himself didn't care much, so things just went on like that.
Jimmy went back to his office and gave Javier a call. Next up was waiting for the results of their search.
The first big move after joining the team needed to make an impact. If it didn't spark enough, it could cause some trouble later on.
This trouble wasn't that it would be very troublesome; those in the office knew his capabilities well. It was more about other people's faith in Jimmy's ability to identify gang targets. Every time the FBI conducted a major operation, results were expected. If they came up empty, there'd be plenty of gossip.
Fortunately, Jimmy chose his target well this time. The MS13 Salvadorans often didn't even bother hiding their cruelty. Even though it was an underground casino, they didn't cover it up much. They hadn't been busted yet because their viciousness instilled too much fear in some people. Getting police personnel on their death warning list for raiding an underground casino just wasn't worth it.
The FBI wasn't afraid, but without another objective, they were too lazy to act. There were just too many underground casinos in New York. Evaluating the benefits of the action, raiding that particular casino wasn't necessary.
Now, with five of the eight gang members who were the main force dead and three injured, it was easy to take them down when the opportunity arose. Javier returned to the office in the afternoon, quickly compiled the search results, and brought them to Jimmy.
During the raid on the underground casino, several gang members were captured, and a large number of weapons, cash, and quite a bit of drugs were seized. All in all, the operation was quite a success.
Jimmy glanced over the data and left the follow-up to Javier, also assigning Mark to accompany Javier to gain some experience.
Operations by the anti-gang unit were usually large-scale, making it difficult to keep things confidential. On the third day of the operation, Isabel Martinez from the Public Affairs Office came directly to his office. "Jimmy, you guys have made quite a splash again."
Jimmy was surprised to see Isabel at the door, walking over to hug her, "Hey, Isabel, long time no see."
Isabel patted Jimmy, signaling him to release her, then said, "How's the case prepping going? The media's already urging us to hold a press conference."
Jimmy: "Didn't the news report on it yesterday?"
Isabel: "That was from other sources. We still need to hold our press conference."
Jimmy thought for a moment, "Give us two more days. We'll sort out the information and discuss the press conference content tomorrow."
Isabel nodded, "Alright, I'll go notify them. Will you be hosting the press conference this time?"
Jimmy shook his head, "We'll decide then. We might have the agents who were in charge of the investigation appear."
The agents who crack cases work hard, and anyone would want to take credit for such an appearance. Let Javier or Mark do it. Jimmy didn't need this at the moment. Appearing too often in public could bring him significant trouble, especially considering those dazzling kill records from before. If they were revealed, at the very least, he'd be labeled as inhumane and accused of racial discrimination.
This wasn't him being overly concerned. He's figured out over the years that normally, over 80% of law enforcement personnel have no shooting record at all. Having more than a single-digit kill count is exceedingly rare. SWAT and SRT, which are specialized urban assault teams, generally have few kill records. They're more about incapacitating then capturing. Currently, his official kill count has already reached three digits, surpassing the kill numbers of some soldiers during the US Army's wartime phases.
The highest official kill record by a military sniper is held by Kael, who killed 160 targets during the Iraq War...
So whether before or after, Jimmy has always tried to avoid too much self-promotion. Quietly taking the credit for promotions is enough, and too much publicity could backfire.
Isabel knew about Jimmy's current situation, nodded with her lips pursed, and turned around to leave his office. Organizing a press conference is a hassle and must be arranged well.
Charges of drug trafficking, shootings, illegal possession of firearms, and assaults on federal agents were all pressing down on the remaining MS13 members. With actual evidence, it's only a matter of time before dealing with them, barring any mishaps. Thus, Jimmy contacted the Federal Prosecutor's Office early, requesting them to get involved in the case early to expedite the process of sorting testimonies and submitting them to court.
While handling these matters, Jimmy kept others busy too. The surveillance team that was previously monitoring MS13 continued to watch other small gangs. He also assigned a car with two agents to openly stake out one of their locations, making it clear they were being watched. It was like the FBI making an example out of them, taking down a small character to warn the others.
Internal communications two days a week didn't pressure Jimmy much. Each of the dozen or so senior agents under him was allocated a few gangs, leading the regular agents to organize the corresponding information. They kept updating based on the surveillance team's info and decided whether to take action against a gang based on their evidence. Of course, they synced up with Jimmy before any action, and during internal communication, they also had to confirm with others to avoid overlap.
The anti-gang unit was the most complex department Jimmy had been a part of. In a smaller city, things would be simpler, but in a mega-city like New York with 8 million people, even with the Brooklyn-Queens field office's support, Manhattan's office still had a lot to oversee. Too many people, too many tasks, and too few agents were their biggest challenges currently.
This complex environment meant that even though Jimmy was mentally sharp and had a good memory, he couldn't force himself to remember all the information. He could only remember which agent was in charge of which gangs and retrieve data through them when needed.
As things went on, a month after his transfer, Jimmy's first major case had already entered the prosecution phase, and the groundwork for the second significant case was already laid.
Several MS13 bases located in Manhattan's Harlem and Queens were now under full surveillance. Perhaps realizing the FBI's scrutiny, they've stayed particularly low-key recently, only engaging in regular gang activities like collecting protection fees and running underground bars or standard street deals. The people Jimmy had pre-positioned were basically idle and bored.
While Jimmy was pondering how long their current resources would last, he suddenly received an envelope containing an invitation from the gentlemen's club Ruiz used to frequent.
Jimmy looked over the invitation repeatedly, still puzzled as to why they would send him one. He went to Ruiz's office, and upon seeing the invitation in Jimmy's hand, Ruiz nodded, "Looks like they're quick to act."
Jimmy: "You know about this?"
Ruiz: "Yes, it's normal. You'll receive more invitations from other clubs soon; don't worry about it."
