Chapter 261: Painful Break Up
Chapter 261: Painful Break Up
"Show off!"
Pa!
Before Damian could even react, something invisible smacked the side of his head and sent him stumbling half a step back.
Clara gasped and immediately covered her mouth as a tiny five-tailed fox dropped onto the desk between them and landed neatly on all four paws like it had rehearsed the entrance.
Rin stood proudly for exactly one second before its expression changed.
Its eyes slowly swept across the office and its ears twitched. It’s s expression slowly turned strange.
Damian’s control had become absurd.
Even though this entire place was nothing more than flames and illusion layered over reality, every object had been reinforced with enough demonic force that even Rin momentarily forgot none of it actually existed.
The desk felt real and the ground felt warm. Everything seemed real.
"Really? We’re crashing each other’s intimate moments now?" Damian raised a brow.
Rin rolled its eyes shamelessly.
"Bitch please, you were being so cringe I nearly died."
It snorted before casually turning toward Clara. She froze as a tiny fox walked forward with surprising elegance before extending a paw.
"My lord is the third prince of hell, embodiment of the sin of lust itself and I’m his spirit beast." Its tails swayed proudly. "Nice to meet you."
It intentionally chose words humans would understand better.
Clara blinked in surprise. The fox spoke more clearly than some people she knew.
Damian immediately covered his face. For the first time since she has know him, his ears turned slightly red with embarrassment
Clara stared in surprise and giggled. It slipped out naturally. Seeing Damian embarrassed felt so absurd she couldn’t stop herself.
The tension that had built inside her all evening collapsed instantly was she reached forward and shook the tiny paw.
Rin nodded solemnly as Clara smiled.
"He does look like a prince."
Damian wanted the ocean to swallow him. His greatest enemy had somehow bonded with the woman he liked within thirty seconds.
It didn’t take long before he got sidelined in his own date. For the next several minutes Clara asked questions while Rin answered them like this was some educational program.
And somehow, hearing her boyfriend was one of seven infernal princes preparing for a future conflict against equally absurd siblings sounded much less terrifying when delivered by a tiny fluffy fox.
Damian sat silently, annoyed because he realized something. If he explained this, she would need sometime to process everything but somehow Rin did it in ten minutes.
Eventually Clara sat quietly with her fingers folded together. Her eyes lowered and realization crossed her face.
"So that’s why he’s pulling away..."
Rin nodded.
"Not only has he outgrown the firm but his safety is also becoming a concern." Rin’s ears folded slightly. "At his wives’ demands he had to step back."
Clara nodded slowly, everything finally connected. It made her realized she wasn’t crazy, she never was.
Her eyes slowly returned to Damian.
But this time there was something different inside them.
Not fear just distance.
The prince of hell sitting before her felt different from the Damian she knew. And suddenly she realized why she always feared losing him.
Even her instincts always knew he wasn’t normal. For the first time she wondered if she misunderstood everything.
The information became heavier, the more she thought about it. Associating with Damian suddenly felt larger than romance.
"Is that why you bought me all those things?" She looked down. "Because you thought this might be goodbye?"
Damian looked at her but he didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes slowly rose and she blurted out another question she couldn’t ignore.
"If you’re the prince of hell...does that mean you’ll leave eventually?"
Damian frowned, that question as one he wasn’t expecting. They were meant to go over eveyting overtume today.
He rubbed his temple and nodded.
"Eventually, I’ll have to go and compete with half siblings I never knew existed."" His voice lowered.
His eyes drifted away as a pause existed between them for a short moment.
Clara eventually nodded quietly while her thought raced. When she looked back up, something had dimmed in her eyes.
"Have you ever used these powers to win your cases?"
Buzz.
The room became quiet as Damian frowned and his eyes narrowed. He opened his mouth but Clara continued before he could speak.
"Now that I think about it It was always strange.Witnesses changing their testimony with no signs of force or evidence of coercion." She looked away briefly but her eyes returned eventually.
"Back then I ruled them out as impossible but now, I can finally see the possibilities. You have done it, haven’t you?" She swallowed hard.
Damian remained silent and Rin’s expression slowly changed. Even it realized this wasn’t excitement anymore, this question mattered.
Seeing Damian still hesitate Clara smiled weakly and quietly asked;
"Were Twenty and Delaney really innocent or did you make it look that way?"
Damian stared silently and then responded with a question of his own.
"Why are you asking these things?"
This wasn’t the reaction he expected. He had considered everyway Clara would react to his abilities. He never considered her bringing up the cases as a possibility.
Clara looked down and nodded. His silence was enough.
"You’re really... You’re truly a demon." Her voice became smaller.
The moment those words left Damian froze and his expression emptied. His chest tightened strangely as he suddenly understood his fear wasn’t irrational.
Clara was a good person and that’s was why he loved her. And good people questioned things.
If he was prince of hell but harmless, maybe she could accept it. But if she believed innocent people suffered because of him then how could she stay with her conscience clean?
Clara looked up and tears had gathered in her eyes.
"I don’t think we should see each other again."
Damian frowned as he reached out.
"Clara—"
But she pulled away immediately and shook her head.
"You made a mother testify against her innocent son! Do you know you killed two people that day?!" She snapped loudly.
The moment she finished her eyes widened in realization that she had gone too far. Damian slowly withdrew his hand with his empty eyes as he nodded slowly.
"I understand." His voice was calm. "If you want this to end here then I’ll accept it."
And for the first time since coming here Damian realized. Maybe he wasn’t afraid she would fear what he was.
Maybe, he was afraid she would understand him and decide he wasn’t worth loving after all.
Now, his fears has become his reality
