Chapter 609: Underground Confrontation
Chapter 609: Underground Confrontation
Chu Miao quickly suppressed the fleeting nostalgia in her heart and refocused her attention on the task at hand.
This was not the time to dwell on the past.
The apocalypse had already happened, and everything they had done back then had proven to be right.
Now, what mattered was surviving... and ending it.
"Everyone, be careful. The zombies inside are not simple." Chu Miao said as she withdrew her divine sense and looked at the group.
The others also withdrew their divine senses and looked thoughtfully at the mall.
"Why are so many powerful zombies gathered together?" Lei Ying asked thoughtfully.
His words immediately made everyone’s expressions turn serious.
Yes, why would so many zombies with such strength be gathering in the city that had already been cleared?
Was the zombie king planning something?
"Do you think the zombie king is inside?" Ye Xuan asked in a low voice, his sharp eyes scanning the broken structure of the mall.
Chu Miao shook her head slightly.
"I didn’t sense anything at that level. But there are several presences that are stronger than the rest. Probably at the level of leaders."
This wasn’t something random. That zombie king was definitely up to something.
However, they didn’t have the means to investigate for now. Or at least, they didn’t have to. They could just find the places with such gatherings and wage war.
However, Chu Miao’s tone didn’t relax when she spoke to the others.
Not because she was weak or afraid, but because she realized that what was happening was probably something that the zombie king had planned.
In that case, they had to prepare for any situation because it was obvious that the zombie king had spies among humans.
Now that the zombies could resemble humans completely, it wasn’t a big issue to plant a few within the human bases to gather Intel.
A group of intelligent zombies working together under several leaders... that was far more troublesome than one powerful enemy acting alone.
So, it was not surprising that the zombies managed to sneak into the city that was supposedly clean and free of zombies.
However, Chu Miao was going to cleanse the place again, and make sure that those zombies don’t dare to come in again.
"Then let’s go in and take a look." Murong Yi said, already stepping forward.
The others followed closely behind.
The moment they stepped into the mall, the atmosphere changed.
Outside, the violent wind howled like a raging beast, but inside, it was eerily silent.
If the team hadn’t used their divine sense to investigate inside and knew that there were zombies cooped up inside, they would have thought that mall was haunted by ghosts for it to be so eerily silent.
The zombies with intelligence were indeed more cunning than even humans.
The dust-filled air was still, and the faint smell of decay lingered everywhere.
Broken shelves, shattered glass, and scattered debris filled the ground. The once lively shopping center had long turned into a graveyard of the past.
"Stay alert and don’t let your guard down no matter how strong you think you are.." Ye Xuan reminded his companions calmly.
He had fought many battles and knew that underestimating the enemy was a grave mistake even when you are strong.
As they moved closer to the place the zombies were hiding, their footsteps lightened.
Even though they were powerful cultivators now, none of them dared to be careless.
After all, intelligence could change everything.
Suddenly, they heard a clacking sound as if something had been dropped.
However, what reached their ears was the echo coming from the underground parking lot.
"The people stopped in their tracks.
"That came from below." Li Kun said with furrowed brows.
We’re the zombies panicking and making mistakes or did they do it on purpose?
No one could tell.
Fortunately, everyone there was a veteran when it came to war, so, they didn’t fall for any cheap tricks.
"Let’s go." Chu Miao said and they quickly found the entrance leading underground.
The staircase was dark, and the deeper they went, the stronger the stench of rot and blood became.
Even for people who had experienced countless battles, the smell was still unpleasant and revolting.
Of course, there was another entrance used by vehicles, but that was too open and exposed them from a far.
It was better to avoid it. So, Chu Miao had chosen to use the dark staircase.
After descending for a while, they finally reached the underground level.
The moment their feet touched the ground, a pair of dull, grey eyes suddenly opened in the darkness.
Then another, and another, and another.
Within seconds, countless pairs of eyes lit up like scattered stars in the dark.
"Roar...!"
A low, suppressed growl spread through the entire parking lot, then more growls followed.
It was as if the zombies were communicating.
"It looks like they noticed us long ago and had been waiting." Ye Xuan said, moving closer to Chu Miao and standing sideways in a protective stance.
Although the two of them were powerful, Ye Xuan still instinctively wanted to protect his beloved.
A figure slowly stepped forward from the darkness.
It looked almost human.
Its skin was pale, its movements smooth, and its eyes held intelligence.
"Humans..." it spoke, its voice hoarse but clear.
Everyone who had just walked in tensed at the sound.
Even though they had already seen intelligent zombies before, facing one directly like this still felt unsettling.
It was as if things were moving in reverse.
After all, these zombies were once humans with intelligence.
Now it felt as if they were going backwards and evolving into humans again.
However, the greyish color of their skin and grey or red eyes couldn’t fool anyone.
Besides, even the most intelligent zombies still had a lingering smell of rot on them.
Behind the first zombie, more stepped out of the darkness and showed themselves.
Without exception, they were all evolved zombies with some level of intelligence.
